CR from Capricorn Technologies is leading a project to design the next generation of machines that will power the Petabox, which is the Internet Archive’s storage cluster. Today, CR and the Petabox team began investigating this server from SuperMicro, which has 48 hardrives in a 4U enclosure. These new storage nodes will be quite a bit different from the Archive’s current storage nodes, which are 1U half-width boxes with four hard drives each.
